About the Environmental Impact Review Board (EIRB)

The EIRB carries out detailed environmental impact assessments and public reviews of development projects referred to it by the EIRB. The EIRB decides whether a project should proceed and, if so, under what specific terms and conditions. In making its decision, the EIRB considers the need for wildlife compensation, mitigation, and remedial measures.

The EIRB has developed Operating Procedures to provide guidance to developers, regulatory authorities, and the public regarding the rules of procedure which the Board will follow when a development proposal is referred to it for public review.

The EIRB is composed of seven people. Three members are appointed by the Government of Canada and three members are appointed by the Inuvialuit Game Council. Of the members appointed by the Government of Canada, one each is nominated by the federal government, the Yukon Territorial Government, and the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Chair is selected by the Government of Canada with the consent of the Inuvialuit.
